Workout habits: During paddling season, Tresnak paddles in his one-man canoe for about two hours, four to five days a week. He typically lifts weights and runs for about an hour each at least twice a week. In between training and working for his dad, he'll grab his shortboard and catch waves. If he has time.

When and why I started working out: "When I first started paddling, I didn't do anything else," Tresnak said. But as he got more competitive, he realized the importance of improving all aspects of his fitness. About four years ago, he started lifting weights to gain upper-body strength. About two years ago, he added running to his workout regimen. That has helped improve his cardiovascular health and endurance. "It's made such a difference," he said.

Good foods/bad foods: At 24, Tresnak hasn't discovered the benefits of eating healthfully — yet. But he knows it's coming. The healthiest part of his diet, besides his mom's home-cooked meals, is smoothies. As for bad foods, the list is long and growing. Chips, soda, beer, MexiMelts from Taco Bell — "I could go on and on," he said, laughing.

Biggest motivator: Tresnak is motivated to stay fit primarily to stay competitive. But whatever he does, it has to be fun. "I work out partly to stay in shape but mainly to have fun," he said.
