OC 1 Surfing Technique - Surfing The Shore Break

The video below is an example of surfing the shore break with an OC 1.
The technique is different from open ocean surfing and resembles the technique used surfboarding.
Be careful in shallow waters and above a reef. Waves break when they have 1.3 x the height of the depth of the water underneath them, a 4 foot shore break will have ~ 3 foot deep water.
You can simply float with the wave once you are on it. To maneuver your boat in the surf, however, your hull speed has to exceed the speed of the water you are moving on - otherwise you rudder or paddle poking can not take effect.
Flying the ama reduces the resistance of your boat for a better ride and it facilitates steering.
Many beginning OC 1 paddlers have crushed their canoe in these seemingly innocent conditions. The extent of damage to the OC is often astonishing.
These boats are not made for breaking waves - make sure to stay out of that zone.
Some paddlers advise not to wear a leech in the surf to be able to separate yourself from your boat when things start going wrong. ( - The footage is from Colin )
