OC 1 Technique Downwind Surfing - Videos

Learning how to 'read the ocean' is a much needed, yet advanced skill. Here are some videos showing the paddler's perspective.

You can see different shadings in the reflection of the water surface.
I like to aim for the 'darker' reflections, they reflect the troughs: the darker, the deeper and the better.
Often just a slight change in course, of a few degree, makes a huge difference.
You really have to focus to read that direction right all the time.
Paddle agressively.

If you watch closely you can see differences in the technique used.

Moffat Beach, Caloundra, Queensland, Australia

Great surfing conditions and great surfing technique. Moffat Run.

Point Dume - Malibu, CA

Great conditions; almost constantly surfing. Dume Run.

Dume Run I - California

Conditions good, great in the second half; aggressively 'chasing the bumps'.

Dume Run II - California

Not very aggressive paddling - quite some opportunities left out.

Dume Run III - California

'Connecting the bumps.'

Dume Run IV - California

Moderate to good conditions, getting somewhat better in the second half; no 'all out' paddling.
